I have a great idea for a product, device or method...

What can I do to protect it?
As simple and direct as this question sounds, the answer can be quite confusing.  Generally, there are four main types of protection for one's ideas and creations -- often referred to  as one's intellectual property. These types of protection  are:  patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets.
